Personal Training Mistakes

This time, it's personal.

Thinking I didn't need a personal trainer

Unknown My idea of a good workout was to lift as much weight as I could. I had no technique, no workout plan and no nutritional understanding. I'd invariably end up pulling a muscle and stop exercising for months. I was making common workout mistakes, but I simply didn't know any better. I could have spent the time doing research on proper technique/eating etc, but I was already starved for time. I finally came to the conclusion that I could learn from someone who has already had the success I want. Hiring a good personal trainer resulted in achieving my goals much faster and with less injury time. More

Not doing enough research before hiring a personal trainer

Unknown Years ago I decided to hire a personal trainer because I wanted to accelerate my progress. I was already a member at a gym (a well know chain in Canada) and I inquired about getting a personal trainer at the front desk. They sent me a trainer who looked fit and after a ten minute chat I signed up for 24 sessions. What I didn't realize at the time is that the accreditation process to be a personal trainer in Canada is extremely suspect. It only takes 2 days to get accredited. My trainer had me doing quite intense workouts and I initially thought it was great. It wasn't until I continued to injure myself that I realized something was wrong. I also didn't realize that while I was paying a considerable amount per session, the trainer was only receiving about 20% of what I was being charged. Great trainers don't work for such small amounts. Years later when I spent time doing some research, I hired a highly competent trainer. I then realized that the previous trainer was having me exercise in an extremely unsafe and potentially damaging fashion. I learned the hard way that it is rare to find a great trainer at a chain gym. I recommend hiring a trainer who operates their own training business. More
